Regulations for taking a pet dog or cat to Vietnam

 

We appreciate you are trying your best to bring your animals with you to a new country. We know that this is worrying you much. Please keep in your mind that moving a pet to another country is not difficult as you think. Everyone can do, you can do it. We can help you easily. Pet Immigration Rules Vietnam

Vietnam does not have pet quarantine but your pets must meet meet the following requirements:

• Your cat or dog must be vaccinated for rabies between 30 days and 12 months prior to entry into the country.
• A copy of the Rabies record should also be included for endorsement.
• A USDA (The USA), CFIA (CANADA) or veterinary health certificate from DEFRA UK or EU. Please contact us for an example
• Import permit permit at arrival (Must apply before coming to Vietnam to avoid delaying and holding animals too long at arrival)

This completes a pet passport and visa for your dog or cat to enter Vietnam.

 

Failure to comply with these regulations will mean that your pet will be refused entry or returned to the country of origin or placed and hold  at the airport until inspection, all at the expense of the person responsible for your pet.

Veterinary Inspection and Custom at arrival: All dogs and cats must be free of evidence of disease communicable to humans when examined at the port of entry to Vietnam. If your dog or cat is not in apparent good health, further examination by a licensed veterinarian may be required at your expense. It is advisable to have a Vietnamese person to deal with local inspection for your pet before arrival. There may be some complication and we must work in advance to be sure your pets can go home quickly after landing. Saigon Pet Relocation can help you.

Other Animals: Birds, invertebrates, tropical fish, reptiles, amphibia, mammals such as rodents and rabbits are not subject to requirements of rabies vaccination, but may have to meet other requirements and should have a health certificate to enter Vietnam. Pet owners are strongly advised to seek further information from the relevant authority of their country and/or that of the country of destination.

If your pet is not a dog, cat or ferret, and especially if it is a turtle or parrot, you should verify that it is not protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITIES).  You will need to apply for additional permits if this is the case. Pet Microchip: Vietnam does not require a pet microchip.

Importing Pets into Vietnam and travelling with them

 

 

• Importing your pet to Vietnam is surprisingly simple and far cheaper to do on your own than to hire a pet transport agency. The procedure before your pet can fly is relatively simple and can be done in time, if you are aware of your relocation 6 weeks before you travel.

  It is important for you to find an airline that is pet friendly and one that can fly direct to Vietnam, or the shortest route possible. You will also need to find out the requirements of the airline for your pet to travel. Once you have booked your and your pet’s ticket to Vietnam there are just a few simple steps that you will need to complete in order to relocate successfully. Please do not hesitate to contact us for advice on airlines and requirements.

  The pet should also have an inoculation record that mentions all the vaccinations they have received and the date.
  Dog: Rabies, Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus and Para Influenza.
  Cat: Distemper, Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Leukemia, and Rabies.

  Upon arrival in Vietnam all the documents should be presented to the immigration officer after you have collected your pets. If your pet does not look healthy to the officer an accredited veterinarian may be brought in to check on their health (at your expense).
  There is no quarantine period in Vietnam so you will be able to take your pets home from the airport.

  Notes

• We advise food and water during the flight
• Cut their meal in half the day prior to the flight and feed them half a portion just before the flight. Also ensure that they have plenty of water right before the flight and a bottle of water available attached to the crate during the flight.
• Sedation is not recommended to sedate them before the flight. Sedatives reduce the heart rate and their heart rate might also be reduced by the flight. This could be dangerous for your pet. Advice on this can be provided by our veterinarian. Please contact us

 

 

Tips on Bringing Your Pets to Vietnam

 

 

The following instructions are exclusively for cats and dogs travel and certainly much more straightforward than that expected. Don’t waste your time and money for agencies or departments who may actually never have been to Vietnam themselves before . Pet owners only need a veterinary certificate and their pets’ inoculation records and the other requirement related to the certificate varies depending on your airlines. For example, if you flight from the United States, a health certificate is required to be signed within 10 days of travel.

 

The process consists of three main steps as follows:

Step 1:

The pet is obliged to be vaccinated for rabies at least 30 days ahead of travel to Vietnam and no more than a year before travel. Next, download the veterinary certificate and have your accredited veterinarian fill in the form to certify that the pet is healthy, free of parasites and there is no sign of diseases transmittable to humans.

Step 2:

Attach the “Pet’s Inoculation Record” to the “Veterinary Certificate”.

Pet’s Inoculation Record is a record of all vaccinations injected to the pet, including information about the name, the manufacture and the lot or batch number of the vaccine, not to mention the date of vaccine administration and expiration, if any. Apart from the rabies vaccination which is required, other vaccines are optional. Follows are some vaccines recommended for dogs and cats.

Dog: Rabies, Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus and Para Influenza.

Cat: Distemper, Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Leukemia, and Rabies.

Step 3:

Upon arrival in Vietnam, you are required to present the mentioned documents (the veterinary certificate and Pet’s Inoculation Record) to the immigration officer after taking your pets at the place that you get your checked in luggage. After checking the documents, they will let you and your pets leave the airport.

Special Note:

– There is no quarantine period upon your arrival in Vietnam.

– Your pet will be put in a crate during the flight, so it is advised to set a crate up inside your house and put your pets into the crate a few hours a day prior to the flight to make them get used to the crate. Don’t drug your pets as it is not good for their health.

– The procedures to take your pet out of Vietnam are quite similar. You must have your pets vaccinated and contact your airlines and the country of destination to ask for other requirements you need to follow.
